Teacher Name:
 Dianne Rowell
Grade:
 Grade 2
Subject:
 Language Arts

Topic:
 Homophones
Content:
This lesson will introduce homophones and provide practice in using them correctly for the class. Key Vocabulary: bear/bare;see/sea;their/there;tale/tail;ate/eight;flea/flee;sale/sail;son/sun;right/write;buy/bye;to/too/two
Goals:
Students will be able to identify common homophones in text and use them correctly in a sentence.
Objectives:
The Learner will apply knowledge of homophones by constructing sentences using homophones correctly with 90% accuracy.
Materials:
Document Projector; whiteboard/chalkboard; text containing examples of homophones
Introduction:
Teacher removes her shoes (and socks if necessary) and begins walking around the front of the room like a bear. The teacher then asks the students what they think she's doing (barefoot bear). She will give students time to guess and write them on the board. Teacher will direct students attention to the Today We Will board and remind them that their focus for today is homophones.
Development:
Teacher will define homophones and list several on the board. She will demonstrate the use of several in a sentence and discuss the importance of using the correct word.
Practice:
Students will volunteer to use words on the board in a sentence correctly. This will continue until each student has had at least 1 chance to use a homophone in a sentence.
Accommodations:
Students may use words from the board or self-generated words. Students may choose to illustrate their words along with their sentences.
Checking For Understanding:
Teacher will move around the room reading sentences and ensuring that all students understand what they're supposed to be doing. She will give feedback during this time and assess using an observation checklist.
Closure:
Teacher will ask 3 students to define homophones. The Teacher will remind students that it is very important to use the correct word in a sentence.
Evaluation:
Most of the students understood the initial lesson. Others had a firm grasp after completing the practice activity and receiving feedback from the students.
Teacher Reflections:
The attention getting activity worked well to get everyones attention. I think the practice activity would be better served if the students worked in groups. I find that students sometimes understand concepts better if it is described by a peer.
