Lesson Plan Title : Mmm Mmm Good - Making Soup

Age Range: Grade 3 through Grade 5 (Upper Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: In this activity, students practice different measurements by creating their own homemade soup recipes.

Objective: The student will be able to write a recipe for a new kind of soup using their own ingredients and correct measurement abbreviations.

Resources:

Several cookbooks

Various measuring cups and spoons

Activities:

Talk with your students about their favorite kind of soup. Have them look through the different cookbooks to find various soup recipes. Talk about the different ingredients and measurements listed. The students can then work individually or in pairs to create their own soup recipes. Remind them to use the correct measurement terms. They can also use the measuring cups and spoons you brought in to try to reasonably approximate the amount of each ingredient needed. Also, encourage them to be creative in the types of ingredients that they use. When their recipes are completed, have them share them with the rest of the class.

Wrap Up:

You can use these recipes to make a winter cookbook for the parents. You also might want to make one or two of these recipes for the students so they can try them.
