Lesson Plan Title : Mapping the Family

Age Range: Grade 6 through grade 8 (Middle School)

Overview and Purpose: Students use maps to show all the different places their fathers have lived. They then combine that information with information found on the internet and complete a worksheet.

Objective: The student will be able to show on a map all the places his dad has lived and then complete a teacher created worksheet about the information.

Resources:

US map for each student

Teacher created worksheet

Internet access for each student (can be done as homework)

Activities:

Have the students work with their father to map out all the places their father lived. (If there are several, have them concentrate on general areas.) After they are finished, have the students complete the worksheet.

Sample questions for the worksheet

What is the farthest apart your dad has lived?

Which city that your dad lived in is the largest?

What percentage of the states did your dad live in?

Wrap Up:

This activity could be extended into History. The students could create a timeline showing when their dad lived in each place and how long he stayed.
