Age Range: Grade 6 through grade 8 (Middle School)
Overview and Purpose: Students have to choose between two activities and convince their classmates which one they like the best. This will help them practice using persuasive speech.
Objective: The student will be able to use persuasive speech to convince their classmates that they liked one activity more than another.
Index cards-enough for three per student
Pass out the index cards and have each student write one thing they like about Valentine's Day on each card. Place all the cards together in a basket and mix them up. Have a student draw two cards out of the basket and read them silently. He should then signal to you which one he likes the best. Then, have him read both statements out loud and try to convince the class which one is the activity he likes the best. The class can then vote on whether they think he is telling the truth or not.
This activity will help students hone their persuasive writing skills. Students can be reminded that even if they don't particularly like the things on either card the idea is just to be persuasive.
