Lesson Plan Title : Conversation Heart Bingo

Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Early Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: In this twist on the familiar game of bingo, students write common phrases found on conversation hearts on their card. As you call out the phrases, they cover them with candy hearts. When you are finished playing, the candy hearts they used as markers are a sweet treat.

Objective: The student will be able to make a bingo card and play bingo using the phrases on conversation hearts.

Resources:

Outline of a heart with four or five rectangles inside

Candy conversation hearts

Transparency with the different phrases found on conversation hearts

Overhead projector

Activities:

Place the transparency on the overhead projector and have the students choose three or four of the phrases to write on their hearts. Pass out the candy conversation hearts for them to use as markers. Call out various phrases or put them on the overhead projector and have the students cover them if they wrote them on their card. When a student has his whole card covered he can say, "Happy Valentine's Day!" Clear the cards and let them play again.

Wrap Up:

Sometimes the conversation hearts use abbreviated phrases that are spelled incorrectly. You could review those phrases and the correct way to spell them with students.
