Lesson Plan Title : Superhero Dad

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: Children often idolize their fathers. This activity encourages students to creatively express their admiration for the dads.

Objective: The student will be able to choose a characteristic he values in his father, draw a superhero object to represent it, and write a paragraph explaining it.

Resources:

Drawing paper

Markers/crayons/colored pencils

Activities:

Talk with your class about what qualities make a good father. Have each student pick a quality that he sees in his father (or other loved male relative) and choose a superhero object to represent it. Examples could be: super shoes because the father always stands for what is right or sunglasses because the father always sees the best in his children (instead of being blinded by their mistakes.) Have the students draw a picture of the item they chose and then write a short paragraph about why they chose it. Have them share their drawings with the class and then have them take them home and give them to their fathers for Father's Day.

Wrap Up:

Some students may have a difficult time finding an object that shows a good aspect of their father. Consider allowing those students to choose an object they think represents a quality that is important to have as a father.
