Lesson Plan Title : My Dad's Job

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: In this activity, students spend some time talking with their dad about the job he does. They are encouraged to ask creative and detailed questions that give them good information, so they can write an interesting report.

Objective: The student will be able to write an informational piece about his dad's job.

Resources:

Teacher created worksheet

Activities:

Have students use the worksheet to interview their dad (or other favorite male relative). Have them use the information to write an informational piece about the job their dad does. Ask the students to share their writing with the class or in small groups.

Sample questions for the worksheet:

1. What is your title at the company and what does it mean?

2. What is your supervisor like?

3. How did you find this job?

Wrap Up:

Encourage your students to ask questions that go beyond the typical ones of "What do you like best about your job?" Consider brainstorming questions with them as a class or have them come up with questions in small groups.

This activity could be extended into art by having the students make a piece of art representing their dad at work. Materials that they could work with could include clay, recyclable materials, paint, and pictures.
