Lesson Plan Title : A New Flavor of Jellybean

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: Students create their own flavor of jelly bean in this activity. They have to write a description and draw a picture of it. The possibilities are endless; they could invent a cheeseburger and fries flavored jelly bean or a sauerkraut and banana flavored one.

Objective: The student will be able to write a description about a new flavor of jellybean.

Resources:

Several varieties of Jelly Belly jelly beans

Activities:

Have the students guess the various flavors of Jelly Belly jelly beans by sampling the different flavors. Explain that they're going to come up with a new flavor of jelly bean. They have to decide what ingredients will be in it, what it will look like, and what the packaging should look like. They should write a paragraph describing their jelly bean, draw a picture of what it should look like, and develop a slogan to advertise it. When they have finished, display their creations in the classroom or the hallway.

Wrap Up:

This activity can also be done in pairs or small groups. The idea can be extended into art by having them make a poster marketing their new flavor.
