Lesson Plan Title : Jelly Bean Math

Age Range: Grade 6 through grade 8 (Middle School)

Overview and Purpose: In this lesson, students use a bag of jellybeans to solve math problems.

Objective: The student will be able to work with other students to solve math problems using jellybeans.

Resources:

One bag of jellybeans per group of students

Teacher created worksheet

Activities:

Divide the class into small groups and give each group a bag of jellybeans. Pass the worksheet out to the students and have them work together to answer the questions.

Sample questions

1. What is the ratio of black jellybeans to other colors in your bag?

2. If you were going to give each person in your group two jellybeans, how many different color combinations could you choose from?

3. What percent of your bag of jellybeans is green and yellow?

Wrap Up:

When the students are finished, come back together and discuss their answers. Have them compare their answers and see how different the compositions of each bag are.
