Lesson Plan Title : We Can Win Too

Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Primary)

Overview and Purpose: The Mexican army won a battle they were sure they were going to lose. In this lesson, students draw a picture about a challenge they faced that they thought they couldn't overcome.

Objective: The student will be able to draw a picture about a time when he did something that he thought he couldn't do.

Resources:

Drawing paper

Crayons/markers/colored pencils

Activities:

Tell the story of Cinco de Mayo to your students. Explain how the Mexican army thought that they couldn't win the battle, but they did. Have your students think of a time when they thought they couldn't do something but they did, e.g., riding a bike, snapping their fingers, or overcoming a fear of dogs. Have them share their example with a partner and then draw a picture of it. Display the pictures in the classroom.

Wrap Up:

Older students could do this activity in writing form. They can be challenged to give an example of overcoming a conflict with a friend or family member or a problem they were having academically.
