Lesson Plan Title : The Battle on the 5th of May

Age Range: Grade 6 through grade 8 (Middle School)

Overview and Purpose: In this activity, students research the battle that took place in Mexico which is celebrated by Cinco de Mayo. They then choose a scene from the battle and recreate it in a drawing.

Objective: The student will be able to create a drawing of the battle that took place in Mexico on the 5th of May.

Resources:

Internet access for each student

Drawing paper

Pencils/colored pencils

Activities:

Have students spend time researching the battle that took place in Mexico on the 5th of May. Have them pay attention to what the landscape looked like, what types of weapons were used, and how many people were involved. Then have them recreate a scene from the battle on a piece of paper. Encourage them to use as much factual information in the drawing as they can. When they are finished, have them share their drawings with the class.

Wrap Up:

This activity could be extended by having students write one or two paragraphs about the scene they chose from the battle. This activity could also be completed in mural form with each student or group of students depicting a different scene of the battle.
