Lesson Plan Title : Comparing Life in the North and the South

Age Range: Grade 9 through Grade 12 (High School)

Overview and Purpose: In this activity, students compare life for black Americans, in the north and in the south, during the first 50 years after slavery was abolished. They are challenged to present their information in a unique and interesting way.

Objective: The student will be able to compare the lives of Black Americans in the north and the south in the first 50 years after slavery was abolished.

Activities:

Have students create a presentation showing the differences and similarities between black Americans in the north and the south during the first 50 years after slavery was abolished. Students should be encouraged to be creative in their presentation and comprehensive in their research. Examples of presentations could include comparisons using Old-Time photos or newspaper accounts.

Wrap Up:

Students should consider lifestyle, education, and economic factors in their research. Students can display their work throughout the school during black history month.
