Lesson Plan Title : Multi-cultural Collage

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Primary)

Overview and Purpose: In this activity, students learn that even people within the same ethnicity have different skin tones. They compare skin tones with their classmates to notice subtle differences in their skin color.

Objective: The student will be able to create a collage by cutting out people of different ethnicities from magazines.

Resources:

Various magazines

Scissors

Glue

Paper

Activities:

Talk with your students about all the different shades of skin color. Have them compare their skin with other friends in the classroom, so they can see that even people within the same ethnicity have different skin tones. Have them continue to explore this concept by creating a multicultural collage. Have them cut out pictures of people with different skin tones and glue them on a piece of paper.

Wrap Up:

This activity could also be completed as a mural. The background for the mural could be an outline of each of the students. They could color in their outlines and paste pictures of different people around them.
