Lesson Plan Title : Bike Safety

Age Range: Grade 3 through Grade 5 (Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: In this lesson, students plan an obstacle course where people can practice bike safety rules.

Objective: The student will be able to plan an obstacle course that allows others to practice bike safety rules.

Resources:

Large piece of drawing paper for each group

Markers/crayons/colored pencils

Matchbox cars

Items that can be used as road blocks, houses, people, etc.

Activities:

Have students work in groups to develop a list of bike safety rules and then an obstacle course that tests those rules. The rules can include riding with the traffic, walking your bike across the street, and wearing a helmet.

When students have completed their courses, have each group share their's with the class.

Wrap Up:

If space permits, you can set up a bike safety course for the students in the gym or on the playground. Have them walk through it instead of riding a bike. Include a worksheet and when they get to an obstacle, have them write on the worksheet what they would do.
