Directions: Scientific inquiry promotes problem solving and encourages higher levels of thinking. Make sure to check out our Guide to the Scientific Method. The following generator will help provide a template for setting up an inquiry based lesson.

Fill in the sections below with required information for each step. Be specific and clear. You may want to use a bulleted format in some sections or use a format that will be easy for students to read and comprehend what is expected. Be sure to save your work in a file that you create

What Are Science Lab Reports?

Experiments are an integral part of learning science. They help to reinforce a concept and show their practicality. However, only experimenting isn't enough; it must also be noted for future learning reference. Knowing how to write a lab report in science comes in handy.

Lab Report Introduction

A science lab report is a comprehensive report of the experiment conducted in science labs. It gives a detailed account of what experiment was conducted, what method was applied, and its outcomes.

How to Write a Lab Report for Science Experiments

Writing a science lab report isn't a challenging task, but there are numerous technical details one must take care of. A science lab report is incomplete without the following headings:

Topic of Experiment

It's the most trivial yet crucial detail in a science lab report as it plays the role of lab report introduction. Since there are numerous experiments in science, you must have a topic written on top of your report to distinguish it from other reports. You can also make a separate title page if your instructor asks.

For making a title page, mention essential details such as your name, your partner's name (if any), your instructor's name, and the experimentation date on your title page. These details help keep track of the report and make access to the document easy.

Problem or Question

Science is based on asking the right questions. Hence, a lab report must also officially start with a question that the experiment will be addressing. You can talk about the relationship of two variables that you may evaluate the effects on each other.

Hypothesis

This part is one of the most crucial parts of a science experiment and must be clearly stated. A hypothesis is a prediction you've made regarding the question, indicating that the purpose of experimenting is to prove the hypothesis. A hypothesis doesn't have to be accurate; it must only depict the relationship of factors you're trying to prove.

Materials

To conduct an experiment that explicitly answers your hypothesis, you must have a list of materials required. Mentioning the quantity and quality (if applicable) narrows the list for precise measurements. For instance, you might need a flask for an experiment, but noting which type of flask you use can ease your task.

Method

This part is where you document the entire procedure of the experiment in detail in bullet form. The steps must be comprehensive yet precise to make them easier to understand and follow if the experiment is replicated. The method must also include proper measurements of chemicals (if any) to avoid any accidents during experimentation.

Observation

This part is where you graphically note the quantitative data that you observed. It would help if you also had any necessary calculations under this heading or branch out to show the process of obtaining the final results. For example, in calculating moles of an element, you may need to apply a formula that you can establish under calculation.

Result

Discussing the quantitative observation in a descriptive way is a part of the result. You must explain what you got out of the experiment. You can also briefly mention whether the hypothesis you tested proved correct or incorrect.

Discussion

This part is where you discuss the reasons you believe made your hypothesis pass or fail. It also discusses any limitations you faced during experimentation that may have affected your results and should be considered in future experiments.

The Last Word

A comprehensive lab report must have all the above headings to clearly and precisely explain an experiment. The purpose and the result are necessary parts of a lab report as it ties the experiment together. Remember to add qualitative and quantitative evidence and details in your science lab report to make it more authentic and credible.
