Lesson Plan Title : Vowel Posters

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)

Overview and Purpose : The following activity is a great hands-on approach to broadening students' vocabulary, where the end result will give visual reminders of the vowel sounds they have been learning.

Objective: The student will be able to cut pictures out of magazines and newspapers that match the vowel sound on the poster.

Resources:

Magazines and/or newspaper ads

Scissors

Glue

5 pieces of poster board or large sheets of paper

Activities:

Write one vowel on each piece of poster board or paper. Divide the students into five groups and assign each group a vowel. Have the students in each group work independently or together to find pictures that have the same vowel sound as the one on their poster. Have them cut the pictures out and glue them to the poster. Review the posters and hang them in the classroom.

Closure:

You could incorporate some 3-D items in the above project (i.e. erasers, silk flowers, feathers, screws, bottle caps, etc.) This will help students who are more tactile learners. Students may have a hard time hearing the vowel sounds in some words. Move around the room and help students with any difficult words.
