Lesson Plan Title : Rhyming Word Relay

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)

Overview and Purpose : It's time to rhyme! Students will enjoy this fast-paced challenge to come up with more rhyming words than the opposing teams.

Objective: The student will be able to add a word to a list of words that rhyme.

Resources:

None needed

Activities:

Divide students into groups of 5 or 6 and have them line up in rows. Give the first student of the first team a word and tell them to name a word that rhymes with it. The second student then names a word that rhymes with the first two words. Continue down the row until a student cannot think of a rhyming word. Move to the next group and give them a new word to rhyme. Have them try to name more words than the group before them did. The team with the most words wins.

Closure:

To increase the difficulty of this game, do everything above, but have each student name a rhyming word and use it (and the previous word) in a rhyming sentence (i.e. "The pot is hot.") Have each student continue adding to the sentence until a student cannot think of a word or makes a mistake when repeating the sentence. Time each team. The team who names the most words and uses them in a sentence in the shortest amount of time is the winner.
