Lesson Plan Title : Predicting Missing Words

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)

Overview and Purpose : Who better to grab students' attention with phonetic word patterns, than Dr. Seuss? This lesson will help students begin to recognize patterns so that they can better predict the words in a rhyming sentence.

Objective: The student will be able to predict the word that is covered up based on the other words in the sentence that rhyme with it.

Resources:

Power Point slides with a Dr. Seuss book written on them

Activities:

Ahead of time create a Power Point presentation for the Dr. Seuss' book, Hop on Pop. Set one word on each page that appears after the students have read the page. (For example, Up, Pup, Pup is ___. After the students say 'up', show the word in the blank.) Explain to the students that they are going to try to predict the missing word in the sentences.

Closure:

A variation of this lesson would be to make Power Point slides that have the complete sentences on them. However, replace one of the rhyming words with a made up word. See if your students can find it. When they do, discuss what they believe to be the right word and why.
