Activities:

Have students list as many things about St. Patrick's Day as they can, including traditional foods, festivities, and jargon. Explain that in this writing activity they are going to create their own holiday. They should include unique traditions, foods, and celebrations. Encourage them to be creative and let them know that this holiday does not have to be practical. When all the students have finished this assignment, have them share their new holidays with the class.

Wrap Up:

This assignment can be done individually or in small groups. It also can be extended into art by having them create some of the symbols that go with their holiday.
