Lesson Plan Title : Unity in Action
Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary)
Overview and Purpose: In this activity, students make a collage out of pictures that demonstrate unity, which is one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
Objective: The student will be able to create a collage showing the Kwanzaa principle of "unity" in action.
Resources:
Various magazines
Scissors
Glue
Paper
Activities:
Discuss the seven principles of Kwanzaa with your students. Explain that today's lesson focuses on the principle of unity. Show them some pictures of people demonstrating the idea of unity and ask the students to explain what is happening in the pictures. When you feel like they understand this principle, have them look through the magazines to find pictures that express this idea. Have the students cut them out and use them to make a collage.
Wrap Up:
When the students are finished, you can attach all the collages together to create a unity quilt. This activity can, also, be extended by having students choose one of the pictures and writing one to two paragraphs about what they see and how the principle of unity is being demonstrated.
