Lesson Plan Title : Invitations and Menus

Age Range: Grade 9 through grade 12 (High School)

Overview and Purpose: Students are encouraged to be creative as they make an invitation and menu to celebrate the feast of Kwanzaa.

Objective: The student will be able to create an invitation and menu for a feast celebrating Kwanzaa.

Resources:

Internet access for each student

Activities:

Have students research the traditional symbols and colors of Kwanzaa. Have them use this information to create an invitation and menu for a feast that will celebrate the holiday. Both items should incorporate several different aspects of the holiday. The menu should be made up of traditional food that is usually eaten at the feast. This assignment can be completed free hand or by using the computer.

Wrap Up:

This assignment can be completed in conjunction with an actual feast that is planned or as its own component in a study of Kwanzaa. Students should try to include the traditional Swahili words that are used for the different symbols and principles.
