Lesson Plan Title : American Symbols Matching Game

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 3 (Early Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: This lesson will not only familiarize students with the various symbols of our country, but they will learn some fun facts about each symbol along the way.

Objective: The student will be able to give one fact about our most widely recognized American symbols.

Resources:

Blank index cards

Worksheet of pictures of American symbols (i.e. Statue of Liberty, American eagle, flag, Lincoln memorial, White House)

Activities:

Talk about each of the symbols on the worksheet. Play a class-wide matching game on the overhead or whiteboard. When the students make a match, they have to tell you one fact about the symbol. If they cannot do that, they still get the match, but no bonus points. Depending on the age of the students they can either tell you a new fact or they can repeat a fact previously given if you play the game more than once.

After they have played a few times, have the students color and cut out their pictures. They can then glue them onto the blank index cards and play with friends.

Wrap Up:

This game is also a good one to use as a center. It can be used to introduce the topic and assess your students' knowledge or as a review.
