Content:
 Addition, sum, fractions, numerator, denominator, mixed numbers, equivalent fractions, improper fractions, like/unlike denominators, simplification (simplest form), Least Common Multiple (LCM), Least Common Denominator (LCD).
Goals:
 To add fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. (Number Sense and Operations Strand).
Objectives:
 NYS Performance Indicators: 6.N.16, 6.N.18, 6.N.27, 6.CN.6.
Materials:
 Whiteboard, markers, overhead projector, transparencies, student's textbook, "Lesson 11 - Add Fractions and Mixed Numbers" worksheet, paper, and pencil.
Introduction:
 Using the "Do Now" transparency on the overhaed projector that shows a circle graph, students will solve the following problem: "The circle graph at the right shows how Vinnie spent Saturday. What fraction of the day did Vinnie spend travelling to and from his family reunion?" Teacher will discuss the answers of the students to this problem with the entire class.
Development:
 Teacher will explain how to add fractions with unlike denominators. Teacher will also go over vocabulary of adding fractions.
Practice:
 Teacher will carry out the following guided and modeling practice activities alternating with independent student practice described in the next section: 1st) Teacher will demonstrate adding two fractions with unlike denominators following steps for Problem 1 of worksheet. Students to practice Exercises 1 and 2 of worksheet. 2nd) Teacher will model another example of worksheet adding three fractions with unlike denominators. Students to practice Exercises 5 and 6 of worksheet. 3rd) Teacher will demonstrate adding two mixed numbers with unlike denominators following steps for Problem 2 of worksheet. Students to practice Exercises 3 and 4 of worksheet. 4th) Teacher will model another example of worksheet adding three mixed numbers with unlike denominators. Students to practice Exercises 7 and 8 of worksheet.

Checking For Understanding:
 Teacher will discuss with the entire class the correct solutions of the exercises on the whiteboard, and allow students to do the same.
Closure:
 Teacher will ask students to briefly summarize what they s have learned from this lesson and encourage them to internalize this knowledge and skills.
