Lesson Plan Title : Where Did It Come From

Age Range: Grade 9 through Grade 12 (High School Level)

Overview and Purpose : The best way to understand a word is to go back to its "roots". Students will gain deeper knowledge of their spelling words as they research the origins of their spelling words.

Objective: The student will be able to research his spelling words and determine the root word and prefix and/or suffix.

Resources:

Internet access for each student (or pair of students)

List of spelling words

Activities:

Students can work alone or in pairs for this activity. Have them research their spelling words on the internet. They can create a chart showing the root word and its meaning and the prefix and/or the suffix and its meaning. Understanding the meanings of these two parts of a word will help students understand other words that have the same root words or suffixes or prefixes.

Review the charts together as a class. Have students make corrections to any words they have wrong.

Closure:

More advanced students can also determine whether the root form of a word is Greek or Latin.
