Lesson Plan Title : Cooperative Spelling

Age Range: Grade 9 through Grade 12 (High School Level)

Overview and Purpose : Students will have to be quick as they work together to figure out the correct spelling of any given word from their spelling list!

Objective: The student will be able to correctly spell a word when asked.

Resources:

Whiteboard

Markers

Activities:

Break the students into groups of four. Have each student in the group choose a number between 1 and 4. Give the students a word and 15 seconds to talk among themselves about how to spell it. Let them write it down if that helps them. After the 15 seconds, call out a number. That student that chose that number goes up to the white board and writes the word. (He cannot take the paper with the word spelled on it up with him.) The first group to have the word spelled correctly wins a point.

The game can be made more difficult by having the students break the word down into the root word and the prefix and/or suffix, or giving the singular form and having them write the plural form.

Closure:

This activity is good for students of all abilities. Students are able to work together to make sure all the students in their group can spell the word that is given.
