Lesson Plan Title : Spelling Shadows

Age Range: Grade 6 through Grade 8 (Middle School Level)

Overview and Purpose : Tracing words has been proven to be an effective tool for memorization. In this lesson, students will have so much fun using their imagination that they will not even realize they are memorizing their spelling words!

Objective: The student will be able to correctly spell words while creating a piece of art.

Resources:

Large sheets of paper

Chalk/crayons/markers - Ones that make large strokes.

Activities:

Give each student a sheet of paper. Assign a spelling word to each student and have them write it on the sheet of paper. The writing should be fairly large. When they are finished, have them pass the paper to another student. That student should create a shadow of the word that was written. Encourage them to be creative, they can outline it or trace lightly over the top of it. Have the students pass the papers again. These students should create another shadow of the word. Hang the words up around the room.

Closure:

This assignment could also be done by one student. They could create two or three shadows of a spelling word using different mediums.
