Lesson Plan Title : Spelling Race

Age Range: Grade 3 through Grade 5 (Elementary Level)

Overview and Purpose : Get ready, get set, SPELL! The adrenaline will be high as students battle it out at the white board to see who can spell the words the fastest.

Objective: The student will be able to correctly spell a given word before his opponent.

Resources:

Whiteboard

Markers

Activities:

Divide the class into two or three teams. Have one student from each team go to the board. Say a spelling word. The students have to spell it correctly and then kneel on the floor when they are finished. The student who spells it correctly and kneels on the floor wins a point for his team.

The game can really get wild when all three students are kneeling and you are silent because all the words are spelled wrong. To keep it fair, you can allow teammates to start shouting for the student to change something, but do not let them give the student the correct spelling.

Closure:

This lesson can get everyone involved pretty fired up! To help the students calm down, you can use the spelling words to play a game of hangman.
