Lesson Plan Title : Rhyming Dominoes

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)

Overview and Purpose : This is a non-competitive game that can be played by the whole class. It is played with pictures instead of words, so even beginning readers can play.

Objective: The student will be able to match pictures that have the same short vowel sound.

Resources:

Set of 4x6 index cards - each card should have 2 pictures that have short vowel sounds

Activities:

Let each student pick a card. Place one card on the white board. Explain to the students that when they have a picture that has the same short vowel sound as one of the pictures on the board they should raise their hand. Call on one of those students to tape their card on the board so the matching pictures are touching. Continue until all the students have had a turn.

Closure:

This game can be laminated and used as a center game. Blank index cards can be left in the center and students can be encouraged to create their own dominoes to add to the game.
