Lesson Plan Title : Plates of Word Families

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)

Overview and Purpose : Students will have a lot to digest as they filling their plates with word families. This activity helps students see the similarities between words. Many of the Dr. Seuss' books are a great way to introduce students to word families.

Objective: The student will be able to spell words by applying the phonics rules.

Resources:

Scissors

Glue

Crayons

Three paper plates with different word families written on them for each student

Worksheets containing various food shapes that each have a word written on them that match the word families on the plates

Activities:

Pass out the worksheets and read the words on the food shapes together. Pass out the paper plates and have the students color and cut out the food. Remind them not to color the food so dark that they cannot read the words. Have them sort the food by word family and glue the food on the correct plates.

Closure:

Students can extend learning by creating their own word family plate for homework. Have them draw the food and write the words on the plate. Each student can share their plate with the class the next day.
