Lesson Plan Title : Compound Word Train

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Elementary Level)

Overview and Purpose : What do you get when you combine the words "box" and "car"? A compound word train, of course! Students will work together to create compound words by using the boxcars they have made.

Objective: The student will be able to make a compound word.

Resources:

Boxcar stencils

Construction paper

Scissors

Crayons or markers

Pre-made construction paper train engine

Activities:

Have students trace two boxcar stencils onto construction paper and cut out the shapes. They can then write one half of a compound word on one boxcar and the other half on the second one. Have the students take turns sharing their words and taping the boxcars in line behind the train engine.

After all the words are on the board, give students a few minutes to write down as many new compound words as they can from the words on the board. Have them share the new words that they made.

Closure:

For homework, prepare a worksheet that has boxcars with words in them. Have the students color the pairs of cars that make compound words the same color. (i.e. 'stop' and 'sign' could both be colored blue and 'blue' and 'bird' could both be colored green.)
