Lesson Plan Title : Placemat Present

Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Primary)

Overview and Purpose: This art activity allows students to create a gift that shows some of the things that are special to them about their mom.

Objective: The student will be able to create a gift placemat that represents things about their mother.

Resources:

Large sheets of construction paper (one piece per child)

Various greeting cards

Glue

Scissors

Markers/crayons/colored pencils

Activities:

Have the children create placemats as gifts for their mothers. Encourage them to create a placemat that reflects things about them and their mom. They can cut up the greeting cards and use the pieces, glitter, and markers to decorate. Laminate the placemats and have the children wrap them in colorful wrapping paper.

Wrap Up:

This is a great way for children who are more creative to express themselves, yet let those that are not artistically inclined be successful too. Consider sending home a note with the gift encouraging the moms to ask their children to explain why they chose the pictures they did.
