Lesson Plan Title : Mother Match

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: Mother's Day and science intertwine in this activity. Students try to identify similar physical characteristics between classmates and their mothers by looking at their pictures.

Objective: The student will be able to identify similar characteristics between mothers and their children from photos.

Resources:

Scanned photo of each child's mother and one of the child

Computer and projector

Activities:

Have each child bring in a photo of themselves and their mother. (If they do not have a picture of their birth mother, have them bring in one of a female blood relative.) Divide the class into groups of three. Show the pictures of one of your students and his mother. Give the students a few minutes to work with their group and look for similar characteristics between the two. Talk about what each group sees.

Wrap Up:

Consider talking to your students ahead of time about appropriate and inappropriate comparisons. Remind them that feelings can be hurt by insensitive remarks and that you are only looking for positive comments. You can extend this activity into math by graphing which characteristics were found to be the similar most often.
