Lesson Plan Title : Chalk Drawing

Age Range: Grade 6 through grade 8 (Middle School)

Overview and Purpose: This activity gives a personal element to art. Students recreate photos of themselves with their moms using chalk. The pictures can be given to the mothers as gifts and/or displayed at the school during conference time.

Objective: The student will be able to use chalk to replicate a photo of him and his mother.

Resources:

Photo of student and mother

Chalk

Drawing paper

Transparency with grid lines (optional)

Finishing spray

Activities:

Each student should bring in a photo of themselves and their mom. Have them replicate the photo by drawing it in chalk. Encourage them to overlay a transparent grid on the photo and fold their paper to match. That will make it easier to draw the picture to scale. They will just have to match the sections. When the pictures are finished, spray them to keep the chalk from smearing.

Wrap Up:

Students can also make frames for their pictures and give them to their mothers for gifts. This lesson can be extended into a writing activity by having the students write one or two paragraphs explaining the picture.
