Lesson Plan Title : "I Have a Dream" Mural

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: Students use Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech as a jumping off point for creating a mural showing the dreams they have for the students in their school.

Objective: The student will be able to express a dream they have for the students in their school.

Resources:

One transparency per group of three students

Transparency markers

Overhead projector

Mural paper

Markers/crayons/paint

Activities:

Discuss with your students Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Talk about what his hopes were for the American people and for all mankind. Divide the students into groups of three and have them create a transparency that shows a dream they have for the students in their school. When all the groups are finished, have them share their transparency with the class. After all the groups have had a chance to share, have the students make a mural of all their dreams. Display the mural outside the classroom.

Wrap Up:

This activity could also be done individually or using posters instead of making a mural. You could extend this by having students write their own speech about their dream.
