Lesson Plan Title : How Would the World be Different?

Age Range: Grade 9 through grade 12 (High School)

Overview and Purpose: In this lesson, students explore the ramifications of a world where Dr. King was never born. They imagine where the civil rights movement would be today without Dr. King's influence.

Objective: The student will be able to write about the impact Dr. King had on society and what it would be like if he had not lived.

Have students research the impact Dr. King had on society. Have them explore how he was as a motivator, an activist, and a person. Then have them consider how things might have been different had Dr. King not lived. Do they think that things would be the same today? Have them share their ideas with the class.

Wrap Up:

Students could do this activity by writing about what they think Dr. King could have accomplished had he not been assassinated. They could also consider what impact his assassination had on moving the civil rights movement forward.
