Lesson Plan Title : A Gift to Give

Age Range: Grade 3 through grade 5 (Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: One of the traditional aspects of Kwanzaa is gift giving. In this activity, students choose an educational gift that they would like to give to a friend or family member for Kwanzaa.

Objective: The student will be able to draw a picture of a gift they would give in celebration of Kwanzaa.

Resources:

Paper

Crayons/markers/colored pencils

Various toy and educational catalogs-optional

Activities:

Explain to the students that one of the traditions of Kwanzaa is giving a gift that is usually educational in nature. Discuss with the students the differences between educational and non-educational gifts. Ask them for examples of both kinds. Have the students draw a picture of a gift that they would give to a friend or family member for Kwanzaa. Allow them to look through the catalogs if they need help with ideas. When they are finished, have them present their pictures to the class.

Wrap Up:

This activity could be extended into a math lesson by giving students a budget and asking them to use the catalogs to find a certain number of educational toys to give as gifts, while staying within budget.
