Lesson Plan Title : Fraction Brew

Age Range: Grade 6 through grade 8 (Middle School)

Overview and Purpose: This lesson has the students creating a witches brew for four. The recipe only makes enough for one witch, so the students have to multiply fractions to make enough to share.

Objective: The student will be able to multiply fractions.

Individual white boards

Paper cauldron

Laminated ingredients for the brew - suggestions could include eyeballs, spiders, cow tails, and fingers

Sweet treat for the students that resembles the brew - maybe hot chocolate or apple cider with a

cinnamon stick

Ahead of time tape the cauldron to the wall and write various fractions on the ingredients. Put the ingredients in a basket or bag. Explain to the students that they are going to make a witch's brew for four goblins. However, the recipe only makes enough for one. The students will have to adjust the recipe so it makes enough for all the guests.

Ask a student to pick an ingredient without looking and read what it is to the class. Then have the class use their white boards to complete the problem. When everyone has finished, review the answer. Answer any questions and then place the ingredient in the cauldron. Have another student pick another ingredient. Continue until all the ingredients have been used.

Pass out a sweet treat that resembles the brew they made.

Wrap Up:

This lesson could also be used for dividing fractions. Increase the ingredient amounts so the recipe makes enough for four goblins and then say that only two could make it. Have the students change the fractions to make enough for two.
