Lesson Plan Title : Average Temperature at the North Pole

Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Early Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: This lesson has students graph the average temperature at the North Pole.

Objective: The student will be able to

*graph the average temperature at the North Pole.

*interpret the graph.

Resources:

Teacher created worksheet that has a blank bar graph on it

Worksheet of the averages temperatures at the North Pole listed by month

Activities:

Introduce the lesson by asking students if they like the cold and how cold is too cold for them. Talk about how Santa lives in the cold all year. Discuss the average temperature worksheet. Help students understand how cold the temperatures are by connecting them to temperatures in their world. Examples could include talking about how cold the freezer is or a cold winter's night.

Create the bar graph as a class and then have the students work together to fill it in and answer the questions on the worksheet.

Sample questions:

1. Which month is the coldest?

2. Which months have the same average temperatures?

Wrap Up:

When students have finished their worksheets, they can draw a picture of how they would look during the coldest month if they were at the North Pole. Encourage them to include as much detail as they can and to be creative.
