Lesson Plan Title : Helpers in Your Community

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Early Elementary)

Overview and Purpose: There are a lot of people within a community that keep things running smoothly. We may never even see some of them. This is an opportunity for students to gain an understanding of the makings of a "community" and the people who give of their time and talents to help others.

Objective: The student will be able to name at least five occupations that help people in your community.

Resources:

Chart paper

Markers

Journals

Activities:

Talk about your local community and ask students to name people who help people in their community (fireman, mayor, garbage man). Start a web diagram and include each person they name. Ask them to list the ways those people help and explore if there is any overlap in the jobs. Students might be surprised at how many jobs share common traits.

Have students write in their journals about their favorite community helper.

Wrap Up:

Field trip opportunity! You could take your students to tour a local facility (Fire Station, Museum, Caf, etc.), and have them write an essay about what they observed during the experience.
