Lesson Plan : M&M - Graphing Mean, Median, Mode

Teacher Name:
 William Mantzouris
Grade:
 Grade 5
Subject:
 Math

Topic:
Graphing, Mean, Median and Mode with M&M's
Content:
Key Vocabulary: Mean, Median, Mode, Line Plot Graph
Goals:
Students will be able to graph their M&M's by different attributes
Objectives:
Students will be able to form questions based on the data they collect and the way they present their data.
Materials:
Smart Board, Smart Board Note Book page open with the outline of a line plot and different colored "dots" to represent the different colors of M&M's. One "Fun Size" bag of M&M's for each student. A worksheet for each student that allows them to inventory the M&M's in their bag and make use of the key vocabulary.
Introduction:
Each student will be given their worksheet and their bag of M&M's with the knowledge that they are not to open their bag until told to, not to feel their bag and not to eat any of their M&M's (at least until the end of the lesson). Explain to the students that we will be collecting date. We will be seeing how many M&M's are in each bag and what the break down of colors is in each bag. We will use the information we collect, enter it on a line plot, and find what is the Mean, Median and Mode of the number of M&M's that come in a bag, as well the individual colors contained inside.
Development:
I will show the students what they need to do with their bag of M&M's - how and where to record the data they collect from their bag.
Practice:
The students will begin to open their individual bags and record the information on their worksheet.
Accommodations:
Students can/will be paired with student helpers.
Checking For Understanding:
This includes Closure. Students will answer the Essential Question - Define, in your own words, Mean, Median and Mode. Determine the Mean, Median and Mode based on the "Class Graph" on the Smart Board.
Closure:
Students will answer the Essential Question - Define, in your own words, Mean, Median and Mode. Determine the Mean, Median and Mode based on the "Class Graph" on the Smart Board.
Evaluation:
I will get immediate feedback based on the answers I get from my essential question. I can use these results to help me plan a small group in the future for the students who need remediation on this/these concept(s).
