Goals:
 - STUDENTS WILL LEARN THREE KINDS OF CRITICISM- MARXIST, FEMINIST, AND READER RESPONSE - STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO VIEW SONG LYRICS THROUGH THESE THREE DIFFERENT LENSES AND UNDERSTAND HOW THEIR VIEW CHANGES - STUDENTS WILL APPLY THIS THINKING TO THEIR FUTURE ESSAY, DEALING WITH A SOCIAL ISSUE THEY FEEL DEEPLY ABOUT.
Objectives:
 - STUDENTS WILL WORK INDIVIDUALLY TO VIEW A SONG IN THREE DIFFERENT LENSES. - STUDENTS WILL WORK IN GROUPS TO CHOOSE THE BEST SONG AND PRESENT IT TO THE CLASS.
Materials:
 OVERHEAD TO SHOW EXAMPLE SONG WHITE BOARD TO GO OVER NOTES ON CRITICISM (FROM LIT THEORY BOOK) COMPUTER TO PLAY SONGS IF STUDENTS WANT.
Introduction:
 WHEN READING TEXTS, HOW DO YOU READ IT? DO YOU TRY TO RELATE TO IT ON A PERSONAL LEVEL? OR DO YOU JUST READ IT TO READ IT? WHY? INTRODUCTION TO CRITICISM- WHY DO WE STUDY CRITICISM? HOW WOULD IT CHANGE THE WAY WE VIEW LITERATURE?
Development:
 OUTLINE KEY POINTS WITH THE THREE KINDS OF CRITICISM. PUT SONG AND SONG ANALYSIS WORKSHEET ON OVERHEAD. USE TWO OF THE THREE KINDS OF CRITICISM TO MODEL WHAT STUDENTS WILL DO. SHOW HOW MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE SONG CHANGES WHEN I CHANGE LENSES
Practice:
 STUDENTS WORK INDIVIDUALLY TO COMPLETE SONG ANALYSIS WHEN FINISHED, STUDENTS WILL GET INTO SMALL GROUPS TO SHARE. WHEN FINISHED, STUDENTS WILL CHOOSE ONE SONG AND SHARE IT WITH THE CLASS.
Checking For Understanding:
 WHEN STUDENTS SHARE THE GROUP SONG, THEIR PRESENTATION WILL SHOW THEIR UNDERSTANDING. EACH STUDENT WILL TURN IN WORKSHEET FOR A GRADE
Closure:
 STUDENTS WILL CHOOSE A SOCIAL ISSUE AND BEGIN BRAINSTORMING FOR THEIR ESSAY.
