Lesson Plan : The Tools For Telling Time

Teacher Name:
 Kristen Nakasue
Grade:
 Kindergarten
Subject:
 Math

Topic:
Identifying tools needed to tell time. Tell time to the hour.
Content:
Students will identify the tools needed to tell time and be able to tell time to the hour on a digital and analog clock. analog clock digital clock hour hand minute hand
Goals:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify the tools needed to tell time. They will also be able to tell time to the hour on a analog and digital clock.
Objectives:
When asked, students will identify the tool needed to tell time. When shown an analog clock, students will be able to tell time to the hour. When shown a digital clock, students will be able to tell time to the hour.
Materials:
analog clock digital clock worksheet with clocks on it
Introduction:
Show students different types of clocks and ask them what is this for/what do we use this for/what does this tell us. Show students a digital clock and ask them "Do you know what time it is?" Explain that the number before the colon tells us the hour and the numbers after the colon tells us the minutes. Show students a analog clock and ask them "Do you know what time it is?" Explain to the students that the short hand points to the hour and the long hand points to the minute.
Development:
Use the model clock and move the short hand to 1 and the long hand to the 12. Tell them that this says 1 o'clock. Move it to the 2 and ask them "Now what time is it". Continue to do this until the grasp the concept that the short hand tells the hour.
Practice:
Let them work together and try turning the hands to different times and asking each other what time the clock says.
Accommodations:
Allow students who are having difficulty to do a worksheet with digital clocks and ask them to tell what time it says. Allow students who are having difficulty to use the model clock to help them. Allow students who are having difficulty to work with a partner to help.
Checking For Understanding:
Ask students "What do clocks tell us?" "What hand on a analog clock tells us the hour?" Which set of numbers on the digital clock tells us the hour; the one before or after the colon?"
Closure:
So, today we learned what tells us time and how to tell the hour on a digital and analog clock. Now we will be able to tell what time we are able to do things like what time is recess?, what time do we eat? what time do we go to sleep?"
Evaluation:
 Use attached rubric
