Goals:
 1. Help students have a better understanding about overcoming family obstacles. 2. Give the students a greater understand about the impacts of poverty. 3. To be familiar with different ways of working with families and students.
Objectives:
 1. Students will be able to differentiate between poverty and homelessness. 2. To have students be able to identify key facts about dealing with families complications. 3. The students will be able to develop an understanding of key vocabulary, such as chronic illness, poverty line and cultural deficit model.
Materials:
 Computer, Textbook, PowerPoint
Introduction:
 - Begin with Professor Hartwell giving a devotion or another student.
Development:
 - We will demonstrate chapter 8 to the class by using PowerPoint and charts in the text book.
Practice:
 - Ask the students for there input on the six important topics being discussed: Working with children and families in poverty, students experiencing homelessness, families being affected by violence, chronic illness, natural disaster and families and children under stress. - We will use the PowerPoint for our visual learners along with speaking for our auditory learners.
Accommodations:
 - Have a print out of the slides for the students who have visual and tangible notes to study by.
Checking For Understanding:
 - At the end of the PowerPoint we will ask if anyone has any questions.
Closure:
 - Explain that overcoming obstacles are very difficult for teachers, families and students.
