Content: | The United States--Introducting the names of the states. |
Goals: | To have students be able to recognize the fifty states through song.
To have the students be able to locate their two states on a map the following day. |
Objectives: | Large group activity--introducing students to the fifty united states.
Indidividual listening skills to recognize their state on the flashcard when it is sung in song. |
Materials: | "Turkey in the Straw" tune via computer
Handout of the words to the song
Flashcards--one for every state
Map of the United States to display in front of class |
Introduction: | Explain to the students that today they are going to be introduced to the fifty states that make up the United States of America.
Have students as a group sit in a circle in the middle of the room.
Pass out flashcards--have each student take one & pass around circle until all have been distributed. Each student should end up with two cards.

Development: | Teachers to sing the song through one time so students can familarize themselves with the tune & pace of the song. |
Practice: | Group (teachers & students) to sing the song together one time.
Instruct the students that this time when we sign the song, when they hear their state being sung, to hold up their card.
Sing the song as a group one more time together. |
