Whale Watch

Introduction:
Do you know what the largest living animal on the earth is? How big it is or how much it weighs? It is the enormous blue whale. There are other species of whales that are also very large, but the blue whale is the largest. There are reasons why all whales are close to extinction today. Our job is to learn more about these animals and help them to survive so they will always swim in our oceans. Each student will belong to a group that will gather information on a whale species and present that information to the rest of the class. Each student will also take part in a class project to raise funds for an organization that works for the survival of these animals.
Task:
Each group will have a specific whale and learn facts about the way it lives, reproduces, and the environment needs to survive. As a group, you will:
-discover that whales are animals and the characteristics of animals.
- draw the migratory routes or place the locations of where the whale is found on a world map.
- create a four-page pamphlet that gives information about the whale the group has have chosen.
- understand why the whale is an endangered species and become aware of conservation efforts to save them.

Each of you will make bookmarks and the whole class will plan a fundraiser to sell them. You can make more than one bookmark if you have the time. Then we will send the proceeds from the fundraiser and send a monetary donation to a conservation organization for whales.
Process:
  1. You and the members in your group will choose a card with the name of a specific whale. You will research and gather information about that whale. (Whales to pick from will include: blue whale, bowhead, fin, humpback, right whale, gray, sei, beluga, northern bottlenose, narwhal, and sperm).

2. You and the members in your group will complete a graphic organizer with information about your whale. You will include a list of at least three additional facts that are not listed on the graphic organizer that make it different from other whales. Look in the Resource section for websites to get your information you will need.

3. You and the members of your group will draw the migratory route or location of your whale; draw picture of the whale and write the name of your whale specie on the map.

4. You and your group will discover if the whale you have chosen is on the endangered species list. You will create a four page pamphlet that will include: Basic information about the whale and its environment, a picture of the whale, why the whale is on the endangered species list and how we can help it from becoming extinct. http://www.seaworld.org/animal-info/animal-bytes/animalia/eumetazoa/coelomates/deuterostomes/chordata/craniata/mammalia/cetacea/endangered-whales-fs.htm

5. You and the members in your group will read about a conservation organization called The Whale Center of New England. You will complete a questionaire that asks what this organization does to help whales. You will also write down the mailing address, phone number and email address of the organizations website.
http://www.whalecenter.org/information.html

6. You will make at least two bookmarks. You will use thin cardboard to draw or paint a whale (or more than one whale) on one side. On the other, you will write the name of the organization, its address, phone number and email address on the back that the whole class will support with the proceeds of this fundraiser. I will laminate the bookmarks when they are complete you will sell them during lunchtime for 1.00 a piece. The pamphlets and world maps that you created will be displayed for people to read as well.
