Introduction: |

Imagine that you and your team have traveled
back in time to the era of the American Revolution. During this
time period, there were many male and female patriots, as well
as loyalists who performed courageous deeds. You will choose
one,personify that person, and bring them back to life. |
|
Task: |
|
|
Your team has been assigned a specific role. Over the next five
class periods, you will use the links provided as well as other
resources (library, textbook, etc.) to become experts on your
chosen character from the American Revolution time period. You
and your team will work together to create a Group Report that
presents your team's vision of what they saw as the American
Revolution through your characters eyes.
By completing this WebQuest, you should achieve the following goals:
1) develop an interest in the study of The American Revolution
2) use the power of the Internet for advanced exploration
3) learn information about key aspects of The American Revolution
4) realize that complex topics can be looked at from various perspectives.

Process: |

|
You will be working together as a group exploring web sites that your teacher has selected. Each group has their own Task to complete and a separate set of web sites to use. There is a task organizer and an evaluation rubric to guide your work.
You and your group will:
Day 1. Write a biography about your character, making sure to
provide your date of birth, your family, and they role you play
in the war. To choose your character, use the links below and
choose someone of significance during the time period. This
must be in essay format and turned in.
Day 2. Create a timeline which includes at least 10 events that
occurred during this time, and include a brief synopsis about
the event. This must be done on paper and turned into the teacher.
Day 3. Find and print out an example of an authentic document
from that time period, and include a summary of why this document
was important to the American Revolution. Turn in to the teacher
upon completion.
Day 4. Create a map of the east coast that pinpoints where the
10 important events took place. On this map, you must also include
all battle that took place and give a brief explanation of what
happened at each battle.
5. Create a journal where you write (in character) what is happening
around you. In these journals, you must properly use and define
the following words: guerilla, siege, ratify, preamble, traits,
ally, cavalry, and mercenary. Make sure to describe any treaties,
or battles that are going on around you.
Phase 1 - Background Information
The sites provided below are important because they will provide basic information about the topic as a whole. Everyone should explore these sites before starting your Task.
Phase 2 - Roles
Here are the general instructions for your group:
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Read through the files designated for your group. You can
print out pages and underline the parts that you feel are important
or cut and paste from the web page into a word processor.
2. Remember to include the URL of the page you take information from so you can return to it and use it as a citation.
3. Focus what you've learned and compiled into one report to be turned in on the due date.
Phase 3 - Reaching Consensus
You have all learned about different parts of The American Revolution. Now group members come back to the larger WebQuest team with expertise gained by searching from one perspective. Each of you will bring a certain viewpoint to the answer: some of you will agree and others disagree. Use information, pictures, movies, facts, opinions, etc. from the web sites you explored to show your teacher that your viewpoint is important.

When you only know part of the picture, you only know part of the picture! Now you all know so much more. Nice work. You should be proud of yourselves! How can you use what you've learned to see beyond the black and white of a topic and into the grayer areas? What other parts of The American Revolution could still be explored? Remember, learning never stops.
