Long Live Revolution

Introduction:
It can be difficult to read a book about a country and time period that is different from our own. However, the more BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE we teach each other with this webquest, the better we will be at understanding the novel and answering our guiding question: what convinces an ordinary person to risk everything for freedom?
Task:
What is the historical and cultural CONTEXT for In the Time of the Butterflies?

To help answer this question, you and ONE partner will be assigned one of the topics below.

-the Dictatorship of Trujillo
-the Mirabal Sisters
-Dominican Gender Roles and Family Values
-Dominican Economy
-Dominican History
-Culture
-Geography
Process:
Each group will be responsible for collecting information on a different aspect of the Dominican Republic during Trujillo's rule.

Working alone or in pairs, you will visit websites to collect data.

You will present your findings to classmates using EITHER an essay or some sort of visual, such as a picture, chart, or graph.

Your presentation MUST use at least three pieces of evidence from the websites above to answer the following questions:
-What are three important things for the class to know about your topic?
-How do you predict this information will connect to the novel?

Resources:
Below, explore the websites that best fits your group's assigned topic. NOTE: You must copy and paste the addresses into a new window.

Essays must clearly explain all three of your points (use a TIED paragraph for each!).

Visual pieces must be visually pleasing, neat, and easy to understand. Ask Ms. Lustick for chart paper and markers.
