Lesson Plan Title : Shamrock Spelling

Age Range: Kindergarten through grade 2 (Primary)

Overview and Purpose: Students are able to practice spelling three letter words by using the three leaves of the shamrock. A letter is written on each leaf and the students must combine them to correctly spell words.

Objective: The student will be able to spell three letter words using the shape of a shamrock.

Resources:

Several shamrock leaves with letters written on them and Velcro on the back

Half of a manila folder with three shamrock stems glued to it and Velcro where the three leaves belong

A list of three letter words

Activities:

Have the students work in pairs to practice their spelling. One student should read a word from the list and the other student should try to spell it using the shamrock leaves. When the student has made all three shamrocks, the pair should switch places.

Example

Spelling Clover

Wrap Up:

Students can also do this activity alone by using pictures to tell them which words to spell. The correct spelling of each word can be on the back of the pictures so students can check their work.
