Activities:

Ahead of time write on chart paper the poems from the book, Chicken Soup with Rice. Each month have the students memorize the poem for that month. Review the poem daily. (A good time is right after they say the 'Pledge of Allegiance'.)

Introduce the poems each month by reviewing any unfamiliar vocabulary. Have them make a small book made of half sheets of paper and copy the poem on one page and draw a picture about the poem on the facing page.

On the last day of the month, have the cafeteria manager, the principal, or a parent volunteer bring a pot of chicken soup with rice. The student's must say the poem as a group before they can have some of the soup.

Closure:

You can send a note home to parents ahead of time, to let them know of the event and ask them to contribute crackers or juice boxes.
