Lesson Plan Title : Eric Carle

Age Range: Kindergarten through Grade 2 (Early Elementary or Primary Level)

Overview and Purpose : This lesson is a basic study of Eric Carle's work. The students study his drawings and stories and look for similarities and differences in the works.

Objective: The student will be able to compare different stories from Eric Carle and look for similarities and differences.

Several books by Eric Carle

Chart paper

Activities:

Talk with students about different parts of a book (i.e. the story, pictures, and characters). Create a chart listing the different parts. As you read each Eric Carle book, have the students help you complete the chart. When you are finished, have students note similarities and differences between the different books. Are there any trends they see in Eric Carle's writing or illustrations?

Closure:

Have students write one or two paragraphs about which book they liked best. Have them talk about the items listed on the graph in their writing.
